Welcome back to YLW

We know air travel looks a bit different now, but we are here to ensure your journey through YLW is as easy, stress-free and safe as possible.

We are working closely with industry experts and government and health officials to implement safety measures so you feel confident taking off on your next trip.

The Government of Canada has issued a number of directives and called for enhanced screening measures in response to COVID-19 to limit its spread and provide support for Canadian travellers. To learn more about travel directives, visit ylw.kelowna.ca/covid19.

Do I need to wear a mask?

Due to an increase in air service and passengers, all arriving and departing passengers, airport employees and visitors who enter the terminal will be required to wear a mask or face covering, with some exceptions.

Children under the age of two, and individuals with medical conditions that prevent mask usage are exempt.

Please ensure your mask is on prior to entering the terminal.

How early should I come to the airport?

We're advising all departing passengers to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes prior to domestic flights to allow enough time to drop off any luggage and go through security.

To avoid contact points at the airport, check-in online prior to arriving and if you're checking a bag, use a self-service kiosk to print off your bag tag and apply it yourself. Sanitize or wash your hands frequently while at YLW to keep yourself and others healthy.

Is the terminal open to individuals who are not flying?

We are encouraging passengers to say goodbye to friends and family outside of the terminal; however, airport visitors are still permitted inside the terminal. If you're meeting an arriving passenger, bring a mask with you and ensure it is on prior to entering the terminal.

If you're picking someone up, free parking is available in the Cell Phone Waiting Area (located next to Esso at Airport Plaza). When your passenger is ready to be picked up, exit this area and meet them at the front of the terminal. Get more information about parking on our Parking page.

Are check in kiosks being cleaned and sanitized?

Airport cleaning staff are working hard to sanitize high-touch areas of the terminal. All common areas are sanitized frequently throughout the day. This includes: luggage carts, hand rails, counters, and wheelchairs to keep our passengers healthy.

Please do your part to reduce the spread of infection. Sanitize your hands upon entering and frequently throughout your time at the airport.

What other amenities are being cleaned and sanitized?

Airport cleaning staff are working hard to sanitize high-touch areas of the terminal. All common areas are sanitized frequently throughout the day. This includes: luggage carts, hand rails, counters, and wheelchairs to keep our passengers healthy.

Please do your part to reduce the spread of infection. Sanitize your hands upon entering and frequently throughout your time at the airport.

We've also implemented several safety measures to keep passengers healthy while travelling through YLW:

  • Increasing the sanitization of high-touch areas such as check-in kiosks, handrails and door handles, luggage carts and wheelchairs
  • Adding more hand sanitizer stations
  • Installing plexiglass barriers installed in customer service areas and at self-serve check-in kiosks.
  • Asking everyone to wear masks in the public areas of the terminal.
  • Installing physical distancing signage throughout the terminal
  • Adjusting queuing lines, adding information to digital screens and announcements to promote physical distancing.
  • Promoting everyday preventative behaviours such as handwashing and staying home if sick, with our teams across the airport.
Are there cases of COVID-19 at YLW?

We will continue to be transparent and share information about events impacting YLW. As such, we are sharing notifications we receive from the BC Centre for Disease Control and airlines about passengers travelling through YLW who test positive for COVID-19. We are providing our utmost support to these agencies and are doing our part to help notify the community of potential exposure.

This information is changing rapidly and we are advising all recent travellers to visit BCCDC’s public exposures page for inbound and outbound flights in B.C. with a case of COVID-19 on board. If you have travelled to or from other parts of Canada, and are concerned about potential in-flight exposure, check the Federal government website

Is the Wine Shop open?

Yes! Although the Okanagan Estate Wine Cellar is currently closed, passengers can purchase wine from the gift shop in the Departures Lounge (after security).

Is the wine selection still the same?

All of the wines you know and love from the wine shop are available for purchase through the gift shop.

Are car rentals available?

Rental cars are available for pick up in the terminal. We suggest arranging and booking your car rental in advance to ensure you have a vehicle available for when you arrive. For more information about car rentals at YLW, visit our Transportation page.

What time does the terminal open? Close?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the terminal building hours are subject to early closure. Currently, the terminal opens at 4:00 a.m. and closes at 10:30 p.m.  Passengers are not permitted to stay in the terminal overnight when flights are not operating.

Will my temperature be taken at YLW?

All airlines are required to conduct a health check of travellers before they board a flight within Canada or departing from Canada. Any traveller presenting symptoms of COVID-19 will be denied boarding for 14 days or until a medical certificate is presented that confirms symptoms are unrelated to COVID-19. Please contact the Public Health Agency of Canada at 1-833-784-4397 with any questions. Visit our COVID-19 travel updates page for more information.

Beginning on July 30, 2020, Transport Canada is requiring the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) to conduct temperature screening at all passenger and employee security screening checkpoints at Canada’s four largest airports: Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal. Find out more about the temperature screening process from Transport Canada.
