Canadian Airports Safety Week Took Off at YLW

Canadian Airports Safety Week kicked off September 23 and the Kelowna International Airport (YLW), along with various airports across Canada have been participating in safety related presentations. This initiative, led by the Canadian Airports Council (CAC), is a national, airport-led effort that promotes healthy and safe work practices among airport employees, with a focus on enhancing passenger and employee safety. This year's theme is safety culture.

"Airports Safety Week serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of safety in every corner of our operations," says Sam Samaddar, Chief Executive Officer, Kelowna International Airport. "It is a testament to the unwavering commitment and collaboration among the airport campus to maintain the highest standards of safety for our passengers, employees, and community members alike."

The weeklong event, which wraps up today, features a series of presentations and discussions covering a wide range of safety themes. These include Foreign Object Debris (FOD), Security Safety, Environmental Safety, Hazard Reporting, Airside Safety, and Worker Safety. These sessions aim to educate and engage airport staff on various safety aspects critical to their roles.

One of the highlights of the week was the FOD walk. Airport staff walked the apron, identifying and removing any debris that could potentially pose safety risks to aircraft and personnel.  Multiple FOD checks are completed throughout the operational day by airport staff to ensure the runway and aprons remain clear for arriving and departing aircrafts.
