Notice of Emergency Exercise at YLW

Public service announcement

On Thursday, September 22nd 2016, Kelowna International Airport (YLW), along with its partners will be conducting a live emergency exercise at the airport. The security threat and aircraft incident exercise will start at approximately 8 a.m. and is expected to end at 1 p.m. Flights and airport operations will not be impacted as a result of the exercise.

There will be a significant presence of emergency response vehicles and activity on the east side of the airfield throughout the exercise. Controlled smoke and flames will also be used within this vicinity. Local traffic will not be affected.

Large-scale emergency exercises are conducted every four years to test YLW’s Airport Emergency Plan, along with those of its emergency response partners. More than 20 agencies will be involved in this mock emergency, with the intent of practicing major incident skills and finding improvements and revisions to the agencies’ current response plans.

Our first and primary goal in any exercise or emergency response is safety for first responders and in the case of this exercise, participants and those observing the exercise.

We appreciate your understanding during this exercise and we’re very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. For more information, contact the airport at 250-807-4300.
